SubLater — Privacy Policy

The short version

SubLater has no analytics, trackers, or ads, and never transmits your viewing activity to us or any third party. Subtitles are processed locally in your browser; sentences you choose to save for review are stored locally on your device and never leave it. The one thing that does leave your device is the email address you enter to unlock a paid subscription — and only if you enter one. It is used solely to ask whether that address has an active subscription, and we store it on no server of ours — it stays only on your device until you disconnect it.

What SubLater processes (locally only)

• Subtitle text of the video you are watching is read and re-displayed inside your own browser tab to provide delayed / dual-language subtitles. This live display buffer is held only in memory and is discarded when you close the tab — it is never sent to any server.
• Saved study sentences. When you star a line (E key) or the app auto-collects a line you replayed, looped, or missed in dictation, SubLater stores that subtitle text, its translation, the video title, the page URL, and a timestamp in Chrome's local extension storage on your device (up to 50 entries on the free tier, 5,000 with Pro). You can view and clear these on the review page at any time; exporting them to a file (TSV) is a Pro feature. This data never leaves your device.
• Word lookups and AI context notes. Dictionary lookups run entirely on your device against a bundled word list. If you request an AI context note, the word and the subtitle line it appeared in are sent to Chrome's built-in on-device AI model — they do not leave your computer, and no external AI service is used. To avoid repeat work, the word, that subtitle line, and the generated note are kept in Chrome's local extension storage (up to 300 entries, oldest discarded first). Clearing saved sentences on the review page also clears this cache.
• Your settings (mode, delay, subtitle size, etc.) are stored in Chrome's local extension storage on your device only.
• Your free-trial start date (0.19.1 and later). To keep the 14-day trial from restarting on every reinstall, SubLater records the date your trial began — a single timestamp, no identifier — in three places: Chrome's local extension storage, Chrome's synced extension storage (so it follows your Chrome profile), and, under the key __es_t0, the browser storage of the streaming sites SubLater runs on. The site copy is what survives an uninstall, and it means a streaming site could in principle see that SubLater was installed and when the trial started. Only the earlier date is ever kept, so this value can shorten a trial but never extend one. Clearing that site's browsing data removes it. No date is ever sent to us.
• Your subscription email. Once you connect it, the email you entered is kept in Chrome's local extension storage on your device so the subscription check can be repeated; pressing "Disconnect" in the popup deletes it immediately.

What SubLater sends over the network

• Your subscription email (version 0.16.0 onward). If — and only if — you enter the email address you paid with, SubLater sends that address over HTTPS to our own endpoint at sublater.netlify.app to ask whether it has an active subscription. That endpoint checks it against our payment provider (Paddle) and answers with nothing but a yes/no and a subscription status. We keep no database and store nothing there — the check is stateless. The address is sent in the request body, not in the web address, so it is not written into server access logs. As with any network request, your IP address is visible to the server. The check repeats about every six hours while an email is connected, and you can remove it at any time with “Disconnect” in the extension popup. If you never enter an email, SubLater never contacts our server or any third party. (To display subtitles it may load the subtitle files of the video you are watching from the streaming service itself — those requests go only to that service, on its own pages, and never through us.)
• License keys (version 0.14.2 and earlier). A license key you entered was sent to the licensing API of our former payment provider (Lemon Squeezy, api.lemonsqueezy.com) to verify the purchase, including a device instance name. In version 0.15.0 SubLater contacted no payment or licensing server at all. SubLater no longer uses license keys.
• In every version, subtitle text, saved sentences, and viewing activity are never sent anywhere, and SubLater contains no analytics, no trackers, and no ads.

Payments

Paid subscriptions are sold through Paddle.com Market Ltd, which acts as merchant of record. Your payment details are handled entirely by Paddle under its own privacy policy, which is linked at checkout; SubLater never sees your card or billing information. Paddle is identified on the checkout page and on your receipt. To check a subscription, the email address you entered is passed to Paddle's API; the only thing that comes back to SubLater is the yes/no answer and subscription status described above.

Third-party services

SubLater operates on Netflix, Coupang Play, Disney+, YouTube, and Viki pages you visit, but is an independent product not affiliated with any of these services. Your use of those services is governed by their own terms and privacy policies.

로컬에서만 처리되는 것

• 자막 텍스트 — 시청 중인 영상의 자막을 브라우저 탭 안에서 읽어 지연/이중 자막으로 다시 표시합니다. 이 실시간 표시 버퍼는 메모리에만 있다가 탭을 닫으면 사라지며, 서버로 전송되지 않습니다.
• 저장한 학습 문장 — 사용자가 별표(E키)로 담거나, 반복·구간반복·받아쓰기 오답으로 자동 수집된 문장은 자막 원문·번역·작품 제목·페이지 URL·시각과 함께 크롬 확장 로컬 저장소(기기 내)에 저장됩니다(무료 50개, Pro 5,000개까지). 복습 페이지에서 언제든 확인·삭제할 수 있고(파일(TSV) 내보내기는 Pro 기능입니다), 이 데이터는 기기 밖으로 나가지 않습니다.
• 단어 뜻과 AI 맥락 해설 — 단어 뜻 조회는 확장에 동봉된 사전으로 기기 안에서만 처리됩니다. AI 맥락 해설을 요청하면 해당 단어와 그 단어가 나온 자막 문장이 크롬 내장 온디바이스 AI 모델로 전달됩니다 — 컴퓨터 밖으로 나가지 않으며 외부 AI 서비스는 사용하지 않습니다. 같은 요청을 반복하지 않도록 그 단어·자막 문장·생성된 해설이 크롬 확장 로컬 저장소에 최대 300건 보관되며(오래된 것부터 자동 삭제), 복습 페이지에서 저장 문장을 전체 삭제하면 이 캐시도 함께 지워집니다.
• 설정값(모드·지연·자막 크기 등) — 사용자의 기기 내 크롬 확장 저장소에만 보관됩니다.
• 무료체험 시작일(0.19.1 버전부터) — 삭제·재설치 때마다 14일 체험이 다시 시작되지 않도록, 체험이 시작된 날짜를 기록합니다. 식별자가 아니라 시각 하나이며 세 곳에 둡니다: 크롬 확장 로컬 저장소, 크롬 확장 동기화 저장소(크롬 프로필을 따라다닙니다), 그리고 SubLater가 동작하는 스트리밍 사이트의 브라우저 저장소(__es_t0 키). 확장을 지워도 남는 것은 사이트 쪽 사본이며, 그 때문에 해당 스트리밍 사이트가 SubLater 설치 사실과 체험 시작 시점을 알 수 있는 흔적이 남습니다. 저장은 더 이른 날짜만 채택하므로 이 값으로 체험이 줄어들 수는 있어도 늘어날 수는 없습니다. 해당 사이트의 인터넷 사용 기록(사이트 데이터)을 지우면 함께 삭제됩니다. 이 날짜는 저희에게 전송되지 않습니다.
• 구독 확인용 이메일 — 연결한 이메일 주소는 구독 확인을 반복하기 위해 크롬 확장 로컬 저장소(기기 내)에 보관되며, 팝업의 '연결 해제'를 누르면 즉시 삭제됩니다.

네트워크로 전송되는 것

• 구독 확인용 이메일 주소(0.16.0 버전부터). 사용자가 결제에 사용한 이메일 주소를 확장에 입력한 경우에 한해, 그 주소가 HTTPS로 저희 자체 엔드포인트(sublater.netlify.app)에 전송되어 활성 구독이 있는지 조회됩니다. 이 엔드포인트는 결제 대행사(Paddle)에 조회한 뒤 구독 여부와 상태만 돌려줍니다. 저희는 데이터베이스를 두지 않으며 이 주소를 어디에도 저장하지 않습니다(조회는 상태를 남기지 않습니다). 주소는 웹 주소(URL)가 아니라 요청 본문으로 전송되므로 서버 접속 기록에 남지 않습니다. 모든 네트워크 요청이 그렇듯 서버는 IP 주소를 수신합니다. 이메일이 연결돼 있는 동안 약 6시간마다 조회가 반복되며, 확장 팝업의 ‘연결 해제’로 언제든 삭제할 수 있습니다. 이메일을 입력하지 않으면 SubLater는 저희 서버나 어떤 제3자와도 통신하지 않습니다. (자막을 표시하기 위해 지금 시청 중인 스트리밍 서비스의 자막 파일을 그 서비스 자신에게서 불러오는 요청만 있으며, 이는 해당 서비스의 페이지 안에서만 일어나고 저희를 거치지 않습니다.)
• 라이선스 키(0.14.2 이하). 이전 버전에서는 입력한 라이선스 키가 이전 결제 대행사(Lemon Squeezy, api.lemonsqueezy.com)의 라이선스 API로 기기 인스턴스 이름과 함께 전송됐습니다. 0.15.0 버전은 결제·라이선스 서버에 전혀 접속하지 않았습니다. 현재 SubLater는 라이선스 키를 사용하지 않습니다.
• 모든 버전에서 자막 텍스트·저장 문장·시청 기록은 전혀 전송되지 않으며, SubLater에는 분석 도구·트래커·광고가 없습니다.

결제

유료 구독은 판매대행사(Merchant of Record)인 Paddle.com Market Ltd를 통해 판매됩니다. 결제 정보는 전적으로 Paddle이 자사 개인정보처리방침(결제 페이지에 링크)에 따라 처리하며, 카드·청구 정보는 SubLater에 전달되지 않습니다. Paddle의 이름은 결제 화면과 영수증에 표기됩니다. 구독 확인을 위해 입력하신 이메일 주소가 Paddle API로 전달되며, Paddle에서 SubLater로 돌아오는 것은 위에 설명한 구독 여부 확인 결과뿐입니다.

제3자 서비스

SubLater는 넷플릭스·쿠팡플레이·디즈니+·유튜브·Viki 페이지에서 동작하지만, 이들 서비스와 무관한 독립 제품입니다. 각 서비스 이용은 해당 서비스의 약관과 개인정보처리방침을 따릅니다.
