SubLater — Privacy Policy

The short version

SubLater has no analytics, trackers, or ads, and never transmits your viewing activity to us or any third party. Subtitles are processed locally in your browser; sentences you choose to save for review are stored locally on your device and never leave it. The one thing the extension itself sends off your device is the email address you enter to unlock a paid subscription — and only if you enter one. It is used solely to ask whether that address has an active subscription, and we store it on no server of ours — it stays only on your device until you disconnect it. Apart from that, SubLater can open two pages on our website, in three ways, with a few coarse values in the address, none of which can identify you (details below): the page Chrome opens when you uninstall (language, version, day counts and how far the first-use tips went — these reach the server when the page loads, like any web address; from version 0.19.27 the install reason is added after the # sign and does not); the same page opened from “Tell us what’s missing” in the rating prompt (after the # sign: language, day counts, how far the first-use tips went and the install reason — no version); and, from version 0.19.27, a three-question survey page that opens only if you choose it (after the # sign: language, version, day counts and the install reason). Values after # stay in your browser. On any of these pages, those values, your answers and any contact you leave are kept only if you press Send — and then they are stored with your IP address and browser type for spam screening. When you send the three-question survey, the extension receives only a “survey finished” signal so it can add 7 days of Pro on your device.

What SubLater processes (locally only)

• Subtitle text of the video you are watching is read and re-displayed inside your own browser tab to provide delayed / dual-language subtitles. This live display buffer is held only in memory and is discarded when you close the tab — it is never sent to any server.
• Saved study sentences. When you star a line (E key) or the app auto-collects a line you replayed, looped, or missed in dictation, SubLater stores that subtitle text, its translation, the video title, the page URL, and a timestamp in Chrome's local extension storage on your device (up to 50 entries on the free tier, 5,000 with Pro). You can view and clear these on the review page at any time; exporting them to a file (TSV) is a Pro feature. This data never leaves your device.
• Word lookups and AI context notes. Dictionary lookups run entirely on your device against a bundled word list. If you request an AI context note, the word and the subtitle line it appeared in are sent to Chrome's built-in on-device AI model — they do not leave your computer, and no external AI service is used. To avoid repeat work, the word, that subtitle line, and the generated note are kept in Chrome's local extension storage (up to 300 entries, oldest discarded first). Clearing saved sentences on the review page also clears this cache.
• Your settings (mode, delay, subtitle size, etc.) are stored in Chrome's local extension storage on your device only.
• Your free-trial start date (0.19.1 and later). To keep the 14-day trial from restarting on every reinstall, SubLater records the date your trial began — a single timestamp, no identifier — in three places: Chrome's local extension storage, Chrome's synced extension storage (so it follows your Chrome profile), and, under the key __es_t0, the browser storage of the streaming sites SubLater runs on — from version 0.19.13 the site copy holds only the day (not the time) and is not written in incognito or private windows; a copy written by an earlier version holds the exact time until you next open that site with SubLater installed, when it is rounded down to the day. The site copy is what survives an uninstall, and it means a streaming site could in principle see that SubLater was installed and when the trial started. Only the earlier date is ever kept, so this value can shorten a trial but never extend one. Clearing that site's browsing data removes it. No date is ever sent to us.
• Your subscription email. Once you connect it, the email you entered is kept in Chrome's local extension storage on your device so the subscription check can be repeated; pressing "Disconnect" in the popup deletes it immediately.
• Install reason and survey bonus (0.19.27 and later, Chrome and Whale). The welcome page that opens after installing offers six short reasons to choose from (for example “saw an ad and got curious”); choosing one is optional. Your choice is stored as one word in Chrome's local extension storage. If you finish the three-question survey described below, SubLater records two times — when the 7-day bonus was given and when it ends — in Chrome's local and synced extension storage, so the bonus is given only once. None of this is sent to us by the extension.

What SubLater sends over the network

• Your subscription email (version 0.16.0 onward). If — and only if — you enter the email address you paid with, SubLater sends that address over HTTPS to our own endpoint at sublater.netlify.app to ask whether it has an active subscription. That endpoint checks it against our payment provider (Paddle) and answers with nothing but a yes/no and a subscription status. We keep no database and store nothing there — the check is stateless. The address is sent in the request body, not in the web address, so it is not written into server access logs. As with any network request, your IP address is visible to the server. The check repeats about every six hours while an email is connected, and you can remove it at any time with “Disconnect” in the extension popup. If you never enter an email, SubLater never contacts our server or any third party. (To display subtitles it may load the subtitle files of the video you are watching from the streaming service itself — those requests go only to that service, on its own pages, and never through us.)
• License keys (version 0.14.2 and earlier). A license key you entered was sent to the licensing API of our former payment provider (Lemon Squeezy, api.lemonsqueezy.com) to verify the purchase, including a device instance name. In version 0.15.0 SubLater contacted no payment or licensing server at all. SubLater no longer uses license keys.
• The page that opens when you uninstall (version 0.19.5 onward). When SubLater is removed, Chrome opens an address we registered (sublater.netlify.app/bye.html) in a new tab. That page asks one question — why you left — plus an optional text box. The extension itself sends nothing: Chrome merely opens the address. The address carries a language value (ko or en) so the page can match your language and, from version 0.19.6, four coarse values that give your answer context — the extension version, days since the first install (the trial start date — a reinstall keeps the original), the number of days subtitles actually ran, and how far you got through the first-use tips (0–3). These cannot identify you; no email, viewing history, saved sentences, or raw install timestamp is included. The page has no analytics. Like any web address, the address (those values included) reaches the server when the page loads, but we read and keep them only if you press Send, together with your answer and note. When you press Send, the submission is stored by our web host's form service (Netlify Forms), which also records the sender's IP address and browser type (user agent) with it and may check it for spam through Akismet; we use these only to screen out spam. Submissions are kept on Netlify until we delete them. Recipients and location: Netlify, Inc. (United States) stores the submission, Akismet by Automattic Inc. (United States) may receive it for the spam check, and Netlify emails each new submission to our mailbox (Gmail by Google LLC, United States). Close the tab without pressing anything and nothing is kept (as with any web request, opening the page reveals your IP address to the server). From version 0.19.27 the address can also carry, after the # sign, the install reason you picked on the welcome page (one word, only if you picked one); values after # stay in your browser and are not sent to the server when the page loads — they are included only if you press Send. From version 0.19.27 the page also has an optional contact box (email or messaging ID) for anyone willing to do a short interview; it is collected only if you fill it in and tick its separate consent box, used only to contact you about the interview, and deleted within 12 months of receipt. From version 0.19.18 the same page also opens when you press “Tell us what’s missing” in the rating prompt — up to version 0.19.26 no values at all were added to its address; from version 0.19.27 the address carries, after the # sign, the language, days since the first install, days subtitles ran, how far you got through the first-use tips and the install reason, but not the version. The same rules apply to anything you choose to send.
• The three-question survey (sublater.com/ask, version 0.19.27 onward, Chrome and Whale). Near the end of the trial, in the trial-ended message, on the expired screen of the popup, and once for people who have used SubLater on five or more days, SubLater shows a line that opens this page; nothing opens unless you press it. The page asks three questions about what you have actually done to study (what, where, how much time or money) plus optional questions about where you stopped, why you installed it, and a contact for an interview. Its address carries, after the # sign, the language, extension version, days since the first install, days subtitles ran and the install reason; these are not sent to the server when the page loads. If you press Send, your answers, those values and your contact (only with its separate consent) are stored by Netlify Forms, which also records your IP address and browser type and may check them for spam through Akismet. Purpose: deciding what to fix, contacting you about an interview if you asked, and spam filtering. Retention: 12 months from receipt, or sooner on request to support@sublater.com. Recipients and location: Cloudflare, Inc. (United States), which carries and protects traffic for sublater.com, so the page and what you send pass through it; Netlify, Inc. (United States); Akismet by Automattic Inc. (United States); and our mailbox that receives Netlify's notification emails (Gmail by Google LLC, United States). You may refuse; SubLater keeps working, but the survey cannot be sent and the bonus does not apply. Once your submission is received, the page keeps one “sent” mark (a time) in your browser's storage for our website so the bonus can be retried, and its thank-you screen sends the extension a single “survey finished” signal. That signal carries no answers and nothing about you; the extension accepts it only from this page, adds 7 days of Pro on your device (once per person: from the end of your trial if it is still running, otherwise from that moment), and replies with only whether it worked and when the bonus ends. The Safari version does not have this page or signal.
• Recipients abroad and how to reach them. On both pages above, what you send goes over the internet to the United States the moment you press Send. The survey page is at sublater.com, whose traffic Cloudflare, Inc. carries and protects through its data center nearest to you, so the page and your submission pass through Cloudflare on the way; the uninstall and feedback page SubLater opens is at sublater.netlify.app and does not. We delete the notification emails on the same schedule as each page's submissions, and together with your submission if you ask us to delete it. • In every version, subtitle text, saved sentences, and viewing activity are never sent anywhere, and SubLater contains no analytics, no trackers, and no ads.

Payments

Chrome extension (web purchase). Paid subscriptions bought on our website are sold through Paddle.com Market Ltd, which acts as merchant of record. Your payment details are handled entirely by Paddle under its own privacy policy, which is linked at checkout; SubLater never sees your card or billing information. Paddle is identified on the checkout page and on your receipt. To check a subscription, the email address you entered is passed to Paddle's API; the only thing that comes back to SubLater is the yes/no answer and subscription status described above.

SubLater for Safari (App Store — iPhone, iPad, Mac). Subscriptions in the SubLater app are sold and billed by Apple; we never see your payment details or your Apple Account. The app and its Safari extension ask Apple's StoreKit on your device whether a subscription is active, and the app keeps only that yes/no (and when the current period ends) in storage shared between the app and its extension on the same device (an App Group). From version 1.0.3 the same on-device storage also holds which of the supported sites you have set to Allow for SubLater and the day it last ran on each, so the app screen can tell you whether setup is working; none of this leaves your device. The Safari version has no email field, never contacts our server, and does not open the uninstall page described above. Cancellations and refunds for App Store purchases are handled by Apple.

Third-party services

SubLater operates on Netflix, Coupang Play, Disney+, YouTube, and Viki pages you visit, but is an independent product not affiliated with any of these services. Your use of those services is governed by their own terms and privacy policies.

로컬에서만 처리되는 것

• 자막 텍스트 — 시청 중인 영상의 자막을 브라우저 탭 안에서 읽어 지연/이중 자막으로 다시 표시합니다. 이 실시간 표시 버퍼는 메모리에만 있다가 탭을 닫으면 사라지며, 서버로 전송되지 않습니다.
• 저장한 학습 문장 — 사용자가 별표(E키)로 담거나, 반복·구간반복·받아쓰기 오답으로 자동 수집된 문장은 자막 원문·번역·작품 제목·페이지 URL·시각과 함께 크롬 확장 로컬 저장소(기기 내)에 저장됩니다(무료 50개, Pro 5,000개까지). 복습 페이지에서 언제든 확인·삭제할 수 있고(파일(TSV) 내보내기는 Pro 기능입니다), 이 데이터는 기기 밖으로 나가지 않습니다.
• 단어 뜻과 AI 맥락 해설 — 단어 뜻 조회는 확장에 동봉된 사전으로 기기 안에서만 처리됩니다. AI 맥락 해설을 요청하면 해당 단어와 그 단어가 나온 자막 문장이 크롬 내장 온디바이스 AI 모델로 전달됩니다 — 컴퓨터 밖으로 나가지 않으며 외부 AI 서비스는 사용하지 않습니다. 같은 요청을 반복하지 않도록 그 단어·자막 문장·생성된 해설이 크롬 확장 로컬 저장소에 최대 300건 보관되며(오래된 것부터 자동 삭제), 복습 페이지에서 저장 문장을 전체 삭제하면 이 캐시도 함께 지워집니다.
• 설정값(모드·지연·자막 크기 등) — 사용자의 기기 내 크롬 확장 저장소에만 보관됩니다.

네트워크로 전송되는 것

• 구독 확인용 이메일 주소(0.16.0 버전부터). 사용자가 결제에 사용한 이메일 주소를 확장에 입력한 경우에 한해, 그 주소가 HTTPS로 저희 자체 엔드포인트(sublater.netlify.app)에 전송되어 활성 구독이 있는지 조회됩니다. 이 엔드포인트는 결제 대행사(Paddle)에 조회한 뒤 구독 여부와 상태만 돌려줍니다. 저희는 데이터베이스를 두지 않으며 이 주소를 어디에도 저장하지 않습니다(조회는 상태를 남기지 않습니다). 주소는 웹 주소(URL)가 아니라 요청 본문으로 전송되므로 서버 접속 기록에 남지 않습니다. 모든 네트워크 요청이 그렇듯 서버는 IP 주소를 수신합니다. 이메일이 연결돼 있는 동안 약 6시간마다 조회가 반복되며, 확장 팝업의 ‘연결 해제’로 언제든 삭제할 수 있습니다. 이메일을 입력하지 않으면 SubLater는 저희 서버나 어떤 제3자와도 통신하지 않습니다. • 라이선스 키(0.14.2 이하). 이전 버전에서는 입력한 라이선스 키가 이전 결제 대행사(Lemon Squeezy, api.lemonsqueezy.com)의 라이선스 API로 기기 인스턴스 이름과 함께 전송됐습니다. 0.15.0 버전은 결제·라이선스 서버에 전혀 접속하지 않았습니다. 현재 SubLater는 라이선스 키를 사용하지 않습니다.

결제

크롬 확장(웹 결제). 웹사이트에서 결제한 유료 구독은 판매대행사(Merchant of Record)인 Paddle.com Market Ltd를 통해 판매됩니다. 결제 정보는 전적으로 Paddle이 자사 개인정보처리방침(결제 페이지에 링크)에 따라 처리하며, 카드·청구 정보는 SubLater에 전달되지 않습니다. Paddle의 이름은 결제 화면과 영수증에 표기됩니다. 구독 확인을 위해 입력하신 이메일 주소가 Paddle API로 전달되며, Paddle에서 SubLater로 돌아오는 것은 위에 설명한 구독 여부 확인 결과뿐입니다.

Safari용 SubLater(App Store — 아이폰·아이패드·맥). SubLater 앱의 구독은 Apple 이 판매·청구하며, 저희는 결제 정보나 Apple 계정을 보지 않습니다. 앱과 Safari 확장은 기기 안에서 Apple StoreKit 에 구독 여부를 묻고, 앱은 그 결과(예/아니오와 현재 기간이 끝나는 시각)만 같은 기기 안의 앱·확장 공유 저장소(App Group)에 둡니다. 1.0.3 부터는 같은 기기 안 저장소에 지원 사이트 가운데 SubLater 를 「허용」한 곳과 사이트별로 마지막 작동한 날짜도 둡니다 — 앱 화면이 설정이 제대로 됐는지 알려 드리기 위해서이며, 기기 밖으로 나가지 않습니다. Safari판에는 이메일 입력칸이 없고, 저희 서버에 접속하지 않으며, 위의 제거 안내 페이지도 열지 않습니다. App Store 구입의 해지·환불은 Apple 이 처리합니다.

제3자 서비스

SubLater는 넷플릭스·쿠팡플레이·디즈니+·유튜브·Viki 페이지에서 동작하지만, 이들 서비스와 무관한 독립 제품입니다. 각 서비스 이용은 해당 서비스의 약관과 개인정보처리방침을 따릅니다.
